The principle is to ask a very simple question: why did the book open the line at that number? Expert sharps consider it second nature to ask this question, but most folks never even think to.
We could list examples for days, but let’s discuss one to show you what we mean:
A and B are two evenly matched teams playing in a highly anticipated game where a lot of betting volume is expected. Team A is at home. After all the factors like home court advantage and such are factored in, the game is a true pick’em. So, what do you think the opening line will be?
Team A – (-1)
That’s right; if you thought zero, you’re wrong.
In this example, we said the game is a true pick’em, and it is. So why did the book open the line at -1? Great question! Now you’re learning.
This is a common example of the public’s inclination to bet the home team in true coin-flip situations. Another common perception (even amongst experienced NBA bettors) that are leveraged by the books in this example is that if a team is going to win, they’ll likely win by more than one point, so it’s worth it to lay the point and pay less vig than you would on a moneyline bet.Congratulations. You’ve just been lured into a trap.
Bookmakers capitalize on these common perceptions by putting pick’em games out at Home Team (-1) or (-1.5) to make the public pay a premium on their habit. They’ll also put out Home Team (-1) opening lines even if the home team should open as a 1-point underdog.
The reason? If public perception is that the game is a flip, the bookmakers know they’re going to receive more bets on the home team. Therefore, they want that side of the action to pay the vig so they make their profit on the percentages in the long run. And overall, they do just that. So long as the game outcomes fall on the 50/50 line, they make money on the point and all the times the supposed “dog” comes through. You profit in this scenario by avoiding the trap of hammering what you think is a betting favorite only laying a point at home.
We aren’t saying that every opening line out there is a trap by the books. What we are saying is that by asking yourself what the book is trying to accomplish with a particular betting line (or price) and why the lines are where they are, you’ll find great opportunities all over the board on a regular basis. Find the Shaded Lines
“Line shading” is a term referring to when a bookmaker anticipates heavy betting action on one side of a matchup and moves an opening betting line toward that side. Line shades can be small (one point) or large (3+ points) and are a great profit-seeking area of betting if you know how to find them.
Let’s say the Boston Celtics go on a hot streak (both in wins and ATS) that gets a lot of media attention. In such a case, more public bettors will start to come in wanting to ride the wave. To keep their betting handle balanced, the books respond by inflating lines involving the Celtics by a couple of points. So if the Celtics were supposed to be a (-9) favorite in a game, the books will put them out at (-11) instead.
There is nothing wrong with what the bookmaker is doing here. If the Celtics stay hot, the books could lose a lot of money each game from lopsided betting on them. So shading the line is the correct move on their part so long as it evens out their action. They can discourage enough sharp bets on the Celtics who want to bet for value, and they make the public take a bigger risk of a dog cover.
In scenarios like these, the value play is often (but not always) to bet against the shaded line and take advantage of those underdog points. Both the books and the sophisticated bettors know that the line has been swung to disfavor a cover by the Celtics. It’s literally a gift to you. Take it! More often than not, the public will be disappointed, while the sharps enjoy a nice score and keep on trucking. The bookmaker is satisfied that they got enough action on both sides, and all is well in the betting world.
The only downside with this sort of play is that it is based on short-term perceptions, so you can’t really plan for it. The only real way to find these opportunities is to keep up with NBA news and events and build up a bit of a bettor’s intuition of when the masses have caused a line shade.
Another great scenario where books shade lines hard is on second-half lines where the action got super lopsided in the first half. This is covered a little bit later in the guide in the Middling Second-Half Bets section.
The overall principle here is to remember that line shading can happen for any reason. Much like the first section talking about reading the bookmaker’s intentions, a big part of finding a shaded line is to try to find out if the book is trying to encourage or discourage action on a certain side. The best way to do that is to stay informed.Fade the Public
We’re sure you see this a lot; it’s part of almost any expert betting advice on any sport that’s out there. Well, it’s there for good reason! The books are there to make money, and they make money by forcing the public to pay a premium for their popular notions.
Even if a notion has merit, it will lose value in the betting market by way of having everyone doing it. It’s not that being with the public is always wrong; it’s just that in this business, it’s going to be very costly to do so over time. Awkward as it might be to tell your best buds that you bet against the hometown team this evening, it beats losing money to mere sentiment. Being a contrarian bettor is a skill you simply must embrace to keep your bankroll intact.
Betting against the public is a great intuition to have, and just by embracing it, you will find yourself sniffing out inflated lines and finding trends where the public is giving too much or too little credit to a team based on reputation or media coverage or whatever whim of the day.
Our tip to you is just to make sure you don’t overdo it. It’s nice to have the skill and the fortitude to go the other way when it’s the right play, but make sure it’s the right play. It’s not enough to find the public’s money and go the other way. That is a losing system. Instead, make sure you combine your plays against the grain with other supplemental factors that make your bet more of a high percentage prospect, e.g., an inflated line or a scheduling trend.Know How to Middle the Second Half
Now we’re betting some NBA! This is a sweet play that you’ll want to learn; it’s an absolute moneymaker, and it’s a part of every professional bettor’s arsenal.
For those not familiar, the term “middle” or “middling” refers to instances where swings in the betting lines allow for opportunities where a player can bet both sides of a game and potentially win both bets.
Atlanta is playing Boston, and the line opens with Boston as a (-5) favorite. You bet on Boston.
An hour before tip-off, it is announced that Atlanta is resting two of its best players that evening and they will not play. Betting action comes in very heavy on Boston, and the book responds by swinging the line on all the way up to a (-10) favorite.
The middling opportunity here is if you bet Atlanta (+10). No matter what, you will win one of your bets. But if Boston wins by 6, 7, 8, or 9 points, both tickets get paid.
This may sound like free money, but there is risk involved: while one of your bets will come through, if both don’t, you will be a slight loser by paying the vig to the house. Make sure you’re aware of the probabilities versus the price before deciding to take a middle.
Now that we have middling down, let’s make some money.
The tip we’re suggesting you look out for is when you’ve already wagered on an NBA game, and then the first half results in a blowout for one side.
Chicago is playing Detroit, and you bet Detroit as a (+3) underdog.
Detroit blows out Chicago in the first half and leads by 15 at halftime.
The bookmaker puts the second half line at Chicago (-6).
BEGIN HAPPY DANCE.
In this scenario, you already have an 18-point cushion for your (+3) bet on Detroit. Excellent.
But if you bet Chicago to cover the (-6) in the second half, Chicago can win the half by anywhere between 7 and 18 points and both of your bets will get paid (excluding O.T.). You now have an 11-point range where both bets will win. Most Excellent.
That example is not an exaggeration. Middling opportunities like these are out there throughout the NBA season. Sportsbooks make a ton offering half lines. But their weakness with some of these lines is that they have to put the line out based on where they think the bets will fall, the action that’s occurred, and the action they’ve already taken on the game. They also have to be wary of what competitors’ books are doing. And they have to do it all in very short time (while the teams are in the locker room).
Look for opportunities like these and crush the books when they give you a big opportunity like this. It’s a winning play that’s yet to be corrected in the betting markets, and we highly encourage you to take advantage of it.

LEO’S CASINO was a premier showcase in Cleveland for R&B and Motown artists. The co-owner of Leo’s Casino, Leo Frank, got his first taste of the entertainment business while serving in the Navy in 1945. He was in charge of a theater on a base near San Francisco that featured Bob Hope, Harry James and other prominent entertainers. In 1952 Leo Frank opened his first club, called Leo’s, at E. 49th St. and Central Ave. It started as a bar but expanded into a jazz room, featuring musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and Cannonball Adderley. The building burned down in 1962. With his business partner Jules Berger, Leo Frank started Leo’s Casino in 1963 at the old Quad Hall Hotel at 7500 Euclid Avenue. The new Leo’s held about 700 people and served dinner. Admission was two dollars. Best parlay today. The club continued to feature jazz until R&B acts quickly took over. The club usually had three shows a night, Thursday through Sunday.
Between 1963 and 1972, an illustrious entourage of musical acts performed at Leo’s Casino, including Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick, the Supremes, the Temptations and the Four Tops. Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin gave some of their first performances at the club while Otis Redding made his last stage appearance at the club prior to his fatal plane crash in 1967. The club also provided a springboard for numerous comedians, such as Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson and Redd Foxx.
Because of its racially mixed audiences, Dick Gregory called the place, ’the most fully integrated nightclub in America,’ however Frank always explicitly made it clear that social justice had nothing to do with his motivations. His reason for opening the nightclub was to make money. The club served as a unique haven in the midst of the racial tensions that gripped Cleveland in the 1960s. In 1966 during the Hough riots, just a few blocks away, hundreds of people, black and white, waited in line to see the Supremes. The Supremes played two sets on Sunday night, July 24, but the police told the club’s owners to cancel the third show and shut down the club. Leo’s Casino shut down for four weeks and then reopened with Ray Charles.
As the acts that performed at Leo’s Casino grew more successful, the singers started playing one-night stands at larger venues for more money. While Leo’s Casino would pay an act $3,000 or $4,000, they could get $15,000 at the larger stages. In 1970 Frank sold his share in the nightclub to Berger. Roulette. Sometimes when the hooligans and I are chatting here in my daycare, they get talking about a a dream they had the night before, and that gets everyone talking about their dreams. Inevitably, someone will mention a bad dream that they had, and the conversation takes a turn.
Often, when they get talking about scary dreams, they start discussing other things that scare them at bedtime — monsters under the bed, their fear of the dark, and being left alone in their room after they’ve been tucked in. These bedtime fears are common among little ones, and while kids should talk about their fears with a parent or caregiver, talking about them with other little ones can instil new fears in the heads of the other children.
When this happens here in my daycare, I like to introduce the hooligans to my ’dream catchers’, which are based on the dream catchers originated by the Ojibwe Nation. A dream catcher is a woven web that’s said to allow only good thoughts through to enter our minds when we’re sleeping. The web traps any bad thoughts before they can enter our dreams.
Then we set about making simple paper plate dream catchers that the kids can take home to hang in their bedrooms.
These dream catchers are fun and easy to make, and the process is made up of a number of steps that help to develop fine motor control.

Let me show you how we make them!
To make a paper plate dream catcher, you’ll need:
* paper plate
* paint
* paintbrushes
* hole punch
* beads
* craft feathers
* yarn
* plastic sewing needle (optional)
* tape
You can begin by cutting the centre out of your paper plate, leaving only the rim to work with, or your child can paint the entire plate, and cut the centre out when the paint is dry.
Have your child paint the paper plate in their favourite colours. Let them decorate it however they want. My youngest hooligans like to blend and mix their colours, or paint large blocks of colour while the older kids prefer to paint more detailed designs.
When the paint is dry, have your child punch holes all around the rim of the plate. Using a hole punch can be tricky for young children but it’s great for developing hand muscles and co-ordination. See how well your child can manage without help before jumping in to assist.

Now it’s time to weave that web.
Cut a long length of yarn, and tape it to the back of the plate. Your child will weave the yarn in and out of the holes, criss-crossing over the open centre of the plate, and threading beads on to the yarn wherever they wish.

To finish the dream catcher, cut several pieces of yarn in varying lengths. Tape these to the back of the plate, allowing them to dangle freely. String a few beads onto these pieces of yarn, and knot them in place, leaving a length of tail. Glue a few feathers to the tails of yarn, and your dream catcher is complete!

Tape a loop of yarn to the top for hanging.

You see I had lost my child many years ago. Lost in the true sense…to the unknown. As he played in the woods behind our cabin in the rural hills of Maine. A place so remote we typically went months during the winter sheltered in our modest log cabin, living off the earnings we had saved throughout the summer on rations and supplies we stocked in fall.
It all happened one cold and crisp autumn day. One of the last few a child his age could go out and play before the winter confined us. He begged me to go outside knowing how once winter sank its teeth into the air he would have little or no chance to run and play. Understanding this I allowed it as we worried not of strangers as there were none to worry about. I was preparing some of the food we would need preserved for the upcoming solitude as he exited the house for the last time. After about an hour or so I failed to hear the distant sounds of childlike imagination being brought to life through stick swords and tree monsters. I looked out the window and saw nothing. My son (no stranger to wandering off) prompted me to grab my coat and go in search. After about five minutes of calling his name…Charlie!…CHARlie!…CHARLIE!!! I began to panic.Scary Dream Catcher
Three weeks, five police searches and two helicopter flyovers later the storm hit. Charlie was lost and all efforts to search were called off. I was alone and had nothing to comfort my thoughts but the chance that somehow…some way he was still alive. Out there…somewhere. Chance…like a candle in a hurricane. Then the dreams began.
At first they woke me. Blurry visions of being half awake…not so much the sight but the sounds. Charlie calling for me…daddy…daddy…Only to come to my senses and plunge back into that despair. More than once I thought of ending it all…but that candle…that fucking candle would not go out. I could only think of one worse fate than the loss off my son. That would be to leave this world only to have him return. I could not let that happen…I had to know.
After a few weeks the dreams became more and more lucid. I could now see Charlie but not how I remembered. Almost like a ghost…transparent. But unlike a ghost, all grey and muted, he was golden. Almost like looking at a light bulb through a piece of parchment. He called for me…daddy…daddy…I’m here! I’m here with the dream catcher. I now had a new tormentor…my own mind.Scary Dream Catcher Svg
It was now March and the weather finally broke. An entire winter of merciless wind and snow. Piled high well above the edges of the roof was the remnants of the worst winter anyone can recall. I needed to get out. Months of dreaming and pacing and planning. What would I do, where would I go? Nobody to calm my already shaken nerves, no thing to keep me grounded. Was I mad? Perhaps but it would not stop me from trying.
I packed all I could carry knowing I would find my boy, in any state…or die trying. The first days trek carried me deep into the forest. I spent a good week (or what seemed like it) wandering farther into the unknown. I had no sense of direction or care for it anyway. After all I was searching for something that had no location. Each gust of wind brought me in a new direction…a faint whisper of “daddy”, “I’m here”, “daddy”, “I’m here”. Was it real or just the cruel residue of my dreams. At this point I cared not. I had nothing left to lose.

As I wept, knowing he was gone, and in the cruelest way…a gentle breeze blew from the direction of the sun behind him…his hide softened and bowed to the breeze, filling his empty shell with form. Jul 25, 2020 Vehicles are a highly sought after commodity on SCUM Island. Not only will they allow the player to travel much faster, but they also provide an amount of protection from firearms and equipped to carry a large amount of gear for loot runs or raiding bases. There are five types of vehicles available if the sledge is included. Each vehicle has it’s own unique characteristics that will make one. New players may join the game after any hand, and they start in the lowest position (asshole or scum). The President receives the Scum’s two highest cards, and gives the Scum any two cards in exchange. The Vice President and the second-to-last player exchange one card similarly.
*The game ends when one player has accrued 4 penalty points - this can also be set to 5 or 6 points. The winner is whoever has the fewest points. President can also be played for a set number of rounds, after which the game ends. The options are 3, 5 or 10 rounds. Two can either be the highest or lowest value card.

President has many alternative names: Scum, Asshole (in Britain: Arsehole), Rich Man Poor Man, Bum, Landlord, Emperors and Scum, Root Beer, Butthead, Capitalism. In Australia it is often called Warlords and Scumbags, perhaps because the politician Paul Keating once famously used the word ’scumbag’ to describe his opponents. In France it is Trouduc or Trou du Cul; in Germany: Einer ist immer der Arsch; in Hungary it is Hűbéres (vassal); in the Netherlands it is Sluitspieren or Klootzakken.
The game has recently spread throughout the Western world, especially among young people, but is probably of Chinese origin. In games of this type (which I call climbing games), each player in turn can either pass or play a card or combination which beats the previous play, and the usual object is to get rid of all one’s cards as soon as possible. Such games have been known in the West only since the 1970’s, but there are many of them in China, perhaps the most famous being Zheng Shangyou. The immediate ancestor of President is perhaps the Japanese game Dai Hin Min.
As the game has spread, numerous variations have developed. I will describe a typical basic version first, and list some variations at the end. As the variations are so numerous, I have tried to group them into types for easier reference. The Basic GameObjective
The aim is to get rid of all your cards as soon as possible. The last player left with cards is called the scum, asshole, or whatever term of derision is locally used.Players and Cards

The game is played clockwise. All the cards are dealt out. Some players may have one more than others.Play
The player to dealer’s left starts by leading (face up) any single card or any set of cards of equal rank (for example three fives). Each player in turn must then either pass (i.e. not play any cards), or play face up a card or set of cards which beats the previous play.
A single card is beaten by any higher single card. A set of cards can only be beaten by a higher set containing the same number of cards. So for example if the previous player played two sixes you can beat this with two kings, or two sevens, but not with a single king, and not with three sevens (though you could play two of them and hang onto the third).
It is not necessary to beat the previous play just because you can - passing is always allowed. Also passing does not prevent you from playing the next time your turn comes round.
The play continues as many times around the table as necessary until someone makes a play which everyone else passes. All the cards played are then turned face down and put to one side, and the player who played last (and highest) to the previous ’trick’ starts again by leading any card or set of equal cards.

When a player whose turn it is to play has no more cards left, the turn passes to the next player in rotation. Therefore in the example, if the two aces were C’s last two cards, it would then be D’s turn to play anything.Social Status
The first player who is out of cards is awarded the highest social rank - for Americans this is President - the next is Vice-President, then Citizen and so on down. The last player to be left with any cards is known as the Beggar, Scum, Asshole or by various terms of abuse. For Europeans the ranks can be King, Minister, .. , Peasant or Boss, Foreman, Worker, Bum.
If keeping score, the players get points depending on their position - for example 2 for the President, 1 for the Vice President and nothing for the others. More importantly, the players of higher status are entitled to enjoy and generally abuse their power over the lower ranking players.
For the next hand the players move seats. The President selects the most comfortable chair, the Vice President sits to the President’s left, and so on around to the Asshole who sits to the President’s right, probably on a crate or packing case.
The Asshole is responsible for shuffling, dealing and clearing away the cards when necessary. As the players are now seated clockwise in order of rank, the first card is dealt to the President, the second to the Vice President, and so on down.
When the deal is complete, the Asshole must give his highest card to the President, and the President gives back in exchange any card which he does not want.
The President then leads any card or set of cards and the game continues as before.

Four Card Poker deals a different number of cards to players than it does to the dealer. Unlike some other types of poker, this game places all players against the house (dealer) as opposed. Four Poker is a new poker variation invented by Roger Snow and marketed by Shufflemaster. The game is similar to Three Card Poker but as the title suggests, four cards are used instead of three. Also, there is no dealer qualifying hand and the player can raise up to three times his ante. However, the dealer gets one extra card to form his best hand.Rules
*Two initial bets are available: The Ante and the Aces Up.
*All players get five cards each and the dealer gets six cards. One of the dealer cards is placed face up, and five face down.
*Players making the Ante bet must decide to fold or raise.

*After all decisions have been made, the dealer will turn over his cards and select the best four out of six.
*The player’s hand shall be compared to the dealer’s hand, the higher hand winning.
*If the dealer’s hand is higher, then the player shall lose the Ante and Raise.
*If the player’s hand is higher or equal then the Ante and Raise shall pay one to one.
*If the player has at least a three of a kind, then he shall also be paid a Bonus, regardless of the value of the dealer’s hand. Two different pay tables are available for the Bonus, as displayed below, and are based on the ante bet. Pay Table 1 is the only one I know of to be actually used.
*Another bet is available (similar to the Pairplus in Three Card Poker), based only on the player’s four card hand, called the Aces Up. Seven pay tables are available as indicated below. The only one I know of to be actually used is pay table 5.

Sushi Go Party! follows the same format as the original game of playing a single card and passing your hand to the left over the course of 3 rounds. One thing that we love about this card game is the speed of play in each round. Once players get used to the cards, everyone is making quick decisions on which card will give them an advantage over their opponents.

Game Wright has introduced a really nice bi-fold board with this edition of the game that is used to keep track of each players scores as well as serving as a “menu”. Players choose a colored token that resembles a soy sauce bottle that will indicate how many points they score after each round.
Before each game, the players set a menu consisting of a nigiri, a sushi roll, three appetizers, two special items and a dessert. There are more than 23 items to choose from which really benefits the replay-ability!
The new cards are a great addition that really shift the strategy when they’re paired with other items on the menu. The Tofu card only scores points if you have less than three. The Soy Sauce card rewards the player that collects an array of different cards while the Green Tea Ice Cream can be a game changer by awarding 12 points to any player that collects four of these cards. Our family is always looking for games that will involve everyone. One of the strengths of Sushi Go Party! is that it allows up to 8 players to join in the fun. With the additional players, the game can get cutthroat and offers a real challenge for even the most seasoned player.
In between each round, additional dessert cards are shuffled into the deck. This is really our only complaint with this game. The original Sushi Go! is a game that is fast paced from start to finish and it takes only seconds to deal new cards between rounds. Adding cards, giving a proper shuffle and re-dealing after each round is a little clunky and can add an additional 5 minutes to the overall game. This probably won’t matter as we spend more time playing the game, but it’s worth mentioning for all those who love the speed of the original game.The Sushi Lover in us all
Between the adorable card art and the simplicity of play, it’s hard not to love Sushi Go Party! (or the original Sushi Go!). The game is such a staple in our house that our kids are always asking us if they can teach our guests how to play. This is a great addition to any family game library and is accessible to kids over the age of 7 years old.
Over the Father’s Day weekend I was able to introduce my board game skeptical Dad to this game. It was a strong endorsement when he said “That game was actually pretty good.” It may not sound like much, but when it comes to board games, this is the equivalent to an “A” for him.

The dealer is determined using any method. Each player is dealt 10 cards each, with the remaining 2 cards being placed in the centre of the table, forming the Skat.Bidding
The player to the right of the dealer then can call a bid, competing with the player to the left of the dealer. The player to the left of the dealer can accept or pass on each bid, at which time the other player can increase their bid or pass. This continues until a player passes. Then, the bid begins competing with dealer.
Bidding is discussed in detail in the scoring section of the guide. The player winning the bid will get the Skat cards. The player winning the bid can then decide whether he wants to view the cards, and subsequently whether they want to exchange cards from their hand with cards from the Skat.
The winning bidder also becomes the declarer for the round. The declarer can call for different game types depending on his hand, and these are discussed in detail in the Game Values section of the guide.

When calling for a Null game, the winning bidder will not take even 1 trick throughout the round. There is also no trump suit in null games. Also, the card ranks are, from high to low, A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7.

In a null game, the winning bidder is not allowed to take a single trick. This means once a trick is won by the winning bidder during a Null game, the round ends and is immediately scored.The Process
As with most trick-taking card games, the game is about winning as many tricks as possible. However, scoring makes this more complex.
Trick-taking is standard. The player to the left of the dealer leads the trick with a card from his/her hand. The card’s suit forms the leading suit.
Players must play cards to follow suit whenever possible. This means a player cannot win a trick by playing a trump card if they still have a card from the leading suit in hand.
If no cards from the trump suit are played, the card with the highest rank while following the lead suit wins.
If one or more cards from the trump suit are played, the highest trump suited card wins the trick.
The player winning the trick will take the 3 cards used in the trick. These will be used in the scoring process.
Players winning each trick will lead the next.
The round continues until all cards are played out. Each player then counts their scores based on the taken tricks.Rules
The Skat rules are:
*If all players pass during the bidding phase, the hand is ended with no winners, and the dealer reshuffles the deck before dealing a new hand.
*Taken tricks are placed face-down beside the player who won them. These tricks cannot be revealed as a reference.
*The player who wins each trick will lead the following trick.
*During a Null game, if the declarer takes a trick, the game immediately ends and is scored accordingly.
*A declarer may forfeit any round provided he/she has 9 or more cards in hand, the round ends and is scored accordingly.
*The game ends once the agreed-upon point threshold is reached.Scoring
Skat scoring is based on multiple factors including card values, multipliers, game type and the Skat.
Scoring is always assigned to the winning bidder, or declarer. If the declarer wins the game, they get assigned a positive score. If the declarer losses the game, the scores will be deducted from their total at double the value.Card values

Also, note that in Null games, there are no card points, the game is entirely predicated on the fact that the calling bidder cannot take even one trick.Overbidding
If the bid exceeds the game value at the end of the round, it is considered an overbid. This hand is considered lost, even if the bidder has the most points in terms of card value. This results in a negative score for the winning bidder.
The overbid hands are scored based on the lowest possible game value, multiplied with the modifiers that would have been applied if the winning bidder did not lose via overbidding.
For example, if the bidder wins the bid with a bid value of 30, but has a game value of 24 after exchanging cards from the Skat, then the bidder will have overbid. Thus, he/she will receive a negative score. Assuming the suit of the game was declared as clubs, it has a base value of 12. Assuming then that the player had a “without 2” Matador multiplier, this then results in a multiplier of 3. Thus, the player will be assigned a score of -72 for the round.Scores for Each Game Type

The game multipliers always start at 1, and are increased by 1 with each of the following:

Skat is a popular German trick-taking game that accommodates 3 players. It was created in 1840 in Altenburg, Germany by Brommesche Tarok-Gesellschaft members. The game is a mixture of Schafkopf, Tarok (Tarot), and l’Hombre. Skat is not to be confused with the American card game Scat. Skat uses three hands with 3 active players, the fourth being the dealer who sits out. There are three different ways to play skat, which change the value of the cards: suit games, grand, and null. The first dealer is chosen randomly, the deal passes left. The dealer shuffles and then the player to their right cuts the deck. The dealer deals 3 cards to each player, 2 cards to the center (this is the skat), then 4 cards to each player. A bid is a possible value of points that are available within the game. For example, 20, 25, 33, 60 points, etc. The lowest bid is 18 points.
The player to the left of the dealer is the forehand (F), the player to the left of the forehand is the middlehand(M), and the player to their left is the rearhand (R). If there are only 3 players, the dealer is the rearhand. F is senior to M and M is senior to R. Senior players only have to match the bid of their junior’s to win the bid. Junior players must exceed the bids of seniors to win.
Auctions begin with F and M. M bids first, either passing or bidding (typically bidding the minimum of 18). F may either pass, and decide to not have the opportunity to be declarer, or say yes and match M’s bid. If F says yes, M may either pass or increase their bid. F decides whether to pass or match M;s bid again. This continues until either F or M drops out by passing. If a player passes they can no longer bid on the hand.
The second portion of the bid is between R and the winner of F and M’s bid. R must increase their bids as the junior, to which F or M must match. Whoever does not pass becomes the declarer, or the winner of the bid.
If M and R both pass, F may be declarer by bidding 18 or cards are thrown in and re-dealt.THE CONTRACTS
The declarer has the right to pick up the two skat cards. Add them to hand and discard two unwanted cards face-down. The cards discarded can be the one’s picked up. After discarding, the declarer chooses their game. If the declarer looked at the skat cards, the contract is skat game. There are seven options:
Diamonds/Hearts/Spades/Clubs: A suit is declared as trumps, the declarer tries to earn 61 points.
Grand: Only jacks are trumps, the declarer tries to earn 61 points.
Null: No trumps, declarer attempts to lose every trick.
Null Ouvert (Open Null): Played like null with the declarer’s hand exposed.
Player’s can choose to not look at the skat cards. However, the game is called a hand game, with the same contract options.
Declarers in suit hand games and grand hand games can up the stakes by increasing the point value of a game. Player’s may announce Schneider and attempt to win 90 points, Schwarz and attempt to win all the tricks, or Open and play with their hand exposed. This must be announced before the first trick.THE PLAY
Play moves clockwise. The forehand always leads the first trick and player should try to follow suit if possible. If a player is unable to follow suit they may play any card. Reminder, in suit and grand games jacks are trumps despite suit. For example, if the suit lead with is diamonds, jack of clubs is still the highest trump.
Tricks are won by the highest trump, if no trump is played, the player who takes the trick is whoever played the highest ranking card that followed suit. The winner of a trick leads in the next trick.
Declarers in suit and grand game win if they take at least 61 points (in card values, including the skat). Opponents win if their tricks combined is at least 60 points.
If opponents take 30 or less points they are Schneider, if they take 31+ points they are out of Schneider. Taking no tricks at all means they are Schwarz. These apply to the declarer as well.

Contract Rummy is played with two standard decks of 52 cards, plus jokers.The number of jokers used should be one fewer than the number of players, sothree players play with 106 cards, four players with 107 and five with 108. The Deal
There are seven rounds altogether. The first dealer is chosen randomly, and thereafter the turn to deal rotates clockwise. The deal itself is clockwise, one card at a time. In the first three rounds, the players receive 10 cards each; in the last four they receive 12 cards each.
The cards remaining after the deal are placed face down on the table to form thestock pile, the top card of which is turned face up and placed alongsideto start the discard pile.Object of the Game
The object of each round is to dispose of all your cards by acombination of melding, laying off, and discarding. In order to do anymelding or laying off, you must begin by fulfilling your contract for the round currently being played.
There are two kind of melds, sequences (also called runs) and groups (also called sets or books).
*A sequence or run, in this game, consists of at least four consecutive cards of the same suit, such as 4 5 6 7. An ace can count as low or high but not both at the same time. So A 2 3 4 and J Q K A are both valid sequences, but Q K A 2 is not valid.
*A group, set or book consists three cards of the same rank, irrespective of suit, such as 5 5 5.
Once it has been melded, a sequence can be extended by adding further consecutive cards at either end, as far as the ace in either direction; the longest theoretically possible sequence being 14 cards long with an ace at each end. A group can be extended by adding further equal ranking cards.
When a player goes out, by disposing of all their cards, the other players score penaltypoints for all the cards remaining in their hands. The object of the game is to be the player with the lowest score at the end of the series of seven rounds.The Contracts
The contracts in each successive round are as the following.

The player to dealer’s left takes the first turn. A turn consists of:1. The DrawThe player must either draw the top card of the stock pileor take the top card of the discard pile. A player who chooses to draw a card from thestock pile must first give any other player who wishes the opportunity to take thediscard (see below).2. MeldingThe player may place groups or sequences from hand face up on the table. This can only be done once by each player during each round. When melding, you mustlay down exactly the combination of groups or sequences which is required by the contract for the round you are in. For example, you cannot lay down one group if you need two, or if you need asequence also. When you meld, you can only meld the minimum number of cards required. For example if you have a sequence of a greater number of cards than four, or a group of more than three, you must wait until your next turn before you can lay off the additional cards.Melding is optional - you are not required to meld as soon as you are able to.3. Laying off. Laying off is adding cards to groups or sequences which have already been melded - both your own and those melded by your opponents. You may lay off only if you have already melded in some previous turn of the current round. You may not lay off before or on the same turn in which you meld. There is no limit as to how many cards you may lay off in one turn. Laying off is optional - you are never obliged to lay off cardsif you do not wish to.4. The Discard. At the end of your turn, you must discard one card from your hand and placed it face up on top of the discard pile (except at the end of round 7 - see below). Play continues with players taking turns clockwise around the table until one person has got rid of all the cards from their hand.
It can occasionally happen that the stock pile runs out of cards. If a player wishes to draw a card when there are no cards left in the stock pile, then you take all the cards of the discard pile except the top one, shuffle them together, and place them face down to make a new stock. The top card of the old discard pile remains face up to start the new discard pile. Play then continues as before.
If there are a lot of ’May I?’s (see below), it is just conceivable that both the stock pile and the discard pile might run out of cards. In that case the play ends. There is no winner and everyone scores penalty points according to the cards that they have in their hands (see scoring).Taking the Discard Out of Turn (the ’May I?’)
If at the start of your turn you choose to draw from the stock rather than take the discard, any player who desires the card on the top of the discard pile may ask for it (hence the name ’May I?’ of the version described later). If several people want the discard, it goes to the earliest in turn to play after the person who is about to draw from the stock. The player who takes the discard in this way must take in addition the top card from the stock as a penalty card.
After someone has taken the discard out of turn, it is possible for a different player to take the next card of the discard pile in the same way, also taking a penalty card from the stock pile along with it. There is no limit as to how many times this can be done, but the same player is not allowed to take two successive cards from the discard pile in this way.
Only when the other players have had the opportunity to take any cards they want from the top of the discard pile does the person who was about to play draw from the stock and continue their turn. Note that the play resumes from its original point - the turn to play does not jump to the person who takes the discard.
Note also that if the player whose turn it is to play wishes to take the card at the top of the discard pile they may do so, without taking a penalty card from the stock pile, and no one else then has the chance to take any discards.Jokers
Jokers may be used in either sequences or groups, to substitute for any missing card.
If a joker is played in a sequence, any player who has the card which the joker is representing, and who has already melded their contract on a previous turn, may, during the laying off phase of their turn to play, take the joker, replacing it in the meld with the card it represents. Any joker gained in this manner must be laid off in the current turn - it cannot be saved for play in a later turn.
Jokers played as part of a group are considered ’dead’; they cannot be reclaimed and played elsewhere.Special Rules for Particular RoundsRounds 1,2,3Dealer deals 10 Cards.Rounds 4,5,6,7Dealer Deals 12 Cards.Rounds 3,6,7In rounds in which the contract requires multiple sequences, you are not allowed to meld two sequences in the same suit which are contiguous. The following are valid as a pair of sequences:

*3 4 5 6 and 8 9 10 JThe above restriction applies only to sequences melded by a single player as part of a contract. You are allowed to meld a sequence which is contiguous with a sequence melded by a different player, and it does not matter if your sequences which were originally separated by a gap become contiguous as a result of cards laid off by yourself or another player.Round 7In the final round, you must meld all your cards at once. In this round only, the sequences you meld are allowed to be longer than four cards - in fact one of them will have to be longer, as you have at least 13 cards after drawing. As you have melded all your cards, there is no discard - play ends immediately after the meld.Scoring

Paul Welty reports that Liverpool Rummy is the same as Contract Rummy, except that the player to the right of the dealer must cut the deck before the deal. If this player manages to cut the exact number of cards required to deal the hand and leave a face-up card, then the cutting player’s score is reduced by 50 points (which is good).May I?
This is related to Contract Rummy, described above, but according to Greg Petras there are the following differences:
*In ’May-I?’, one deck of cards is used per 2 people playing, including both jokers from each deck of cards.
*The sequences or groups in your initial meld can contain more than the minimum number of cards. For example, in round 3, if you have, say, 3-4-5-6-7 and 2-3-4-5-6-7, you may lay down all of these cards at once in your melding turn. You do not have to put down, for example, just 3-4-5-6 and 2-3-4-5 first and then wait until your next turn to then to lay off the left over 7 and 6-7. The same applies to groups - the initial meld may have as many cards as you like (minimum 3) of the same rank.
*Jokers which have been melded cannot be reused. For example, if someone has put down a sequence 3-4-joker-6, and you have the 5 of that suit, you may not take the joker out in exchange for your 5.
*In the rounds where the contract has more than one sequence (rounds 3, 6, and 7)there is no prohibition against contiguous sequences. For example it is acceptable to meld 3-4-5-6 and 7-8-9-10 of the same suit as two sequences.
*The special rules for round 7 do not apply. The player melding may have more than 12 cards: if they have said ’May-I?’ during that round they will have two extra cards in their hand for each ’May-I?’ they said. It is not necessary to use all the cards in your hand in your 3 sequences, and if the player melding has cards left over, then play continues as in other rounds.
*The Joker is worth 25 points, not 15 points.Shanghai Rummy
There are several versions of Shanghai Rummy. There is also a rummy game known to some people as Shanghai, which is not a contract game, but a type of Carousel or Manipulation rummy - this will be found on the Carousel page.

In a run, aces are high only. A-2-3-4 is not a run. When putting down runs, consecutive runs in the same suit (such as 6-7-8-9 and 10-J-Q-K) cannot be put down by the same player in the initial meld. Runs can, however, become consecutive later, when they are extended by adding extra cards.
A player cannot put down two books of the same rank - six eights do not make two books.
A joker can be used in a meld as a substitute for a missing card. A book or run cannot contain more than one joker (but a player can meld more than one joker provided that they are used in different books or runs).
Further cards can be added to your initial meld and to other players melds in the same turn that the initial meld is laid down or in later turns.The ’May I?’
Each player can take the discard out of turn at most two times in each round. It is convenient to use pennies or other tokens to keep track of this. The player who wants the discard must also take the top two cards from the face down stock, and does not meld or discard. Play then reverts to the person whose turn was interrupted.
You can only take the discard by a ’May I?’ if the player whose turn it is does not want it. If more than one player wants to ’May I?’ the same card, the one whose turn to play would be sooner has priority.The Shanghai
This occurs when a card is discarded which could be added to one of the melds that is already on the table. There are two situations:
*If you deliberately discard a card which could be added to an existing meld, you can call ’Shanghai’ as you discard it. This prevents it from being picked up by the next player or being ’May I?’d in that player’s turn. This can happen, for example, when you have not yet made your initial meld, but wish to get rid of a card from your hand which happens to fit one of the other players’ melds.
*If you discard a card which could be added to an existing meld without calling Shanghai, then any other player (even a player who has not yet put down their contract) may call ’Shanghai’, and add the discard to a meld. The calling player then offers their hand to you face down, and you must draw a card from it and place it in your own hand. The player to your left then takes their turn as normal.
Note that a ’Shanghai’ takes precedence over a ’May I?’. If a player calls ’Shanghai’ to protect a discard or to take a discard and add it to a meld on the table, this stops any other player taking that card with a ’May I?’ on that turn.The Scoring
